This work describes the usage of Error Field Correction coil system [Barlow I. et al 2001 Fusion Eng. Des. 58-59 189], which is a set of 4 coils located external to the vessel of the JET device, with the aim of introducing non-axisymmetric n=1 magnetic field perturbations in various targeted plasma experiments. Besides being used to characterize…

This Letter reports on observed interplay between beam-driven modes of sweeping frequency (chirping modes) and transitions to the enhanced global confinement regime (H-mode) and back to the low confinement regime (L-mode) in the spherical tokamak ST40. The H-modes of plasma confinement are identified from decreased intensity of Dα signal and f…

The spherical torus/tokamak (ST) is a potentially attractive configuration for narrowing scientific and technical gaps to a fusion demonstration power plant and as a more compact and/or modular fusion power source. Due to a reduced plasma surface area to volume ratio, the ST configuration offers the potential to access high power exhaust heat fl…

A Fusion Nuclear Science Facility (FNSF) could play an important role in the development of fusion energy by providing the nuclear environment needed to develop fusion materials and components. The spherical torus/tokamak (ST) is a leading candidate for an FNSF due to its potentially high neutron wall loading and modular configuration. A key consid…

In the last three years, magnetic reconnection research in the MAST spherical tokamak achieved major progress by use of new 32 chord ion Doppler tomography, 130 channel YAG and 300 channel Ruby Thomson scattering diagnostics. In addition to the previously achieved high power plasma heating during merging, detailed full temperature profile measureme…

This paper describes a recent advances in merging/reconnection experiments in MAST, namely tomographic ion Doppler spectroscopy capability from 2013 which solves the problem of the absence of ion temperature profile measurement during the solenoid-less startup. Providing 32 channel line-integrated spectra from 0.25m< rtangential <1.1m are con…

Electron and ion heating characteristics during merging reconnection startup on the MAST spherical tokamak have been revealed in detail using 130 channel YAG- and 300 channel Ruby-Thomson scattering system and a new 32 chord ion Doppler tomography diagnostic. Detailed 2D profile measurements of electron and ion temperature together with electron de…

The three dimensional plasma boundary displacements induced by applied nonaxisymmetric magnetic perturbations have been measured in ASDEX Upgrade, DIII-D, JET, MAST and NSTX. The displacements arising from applied resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) are measured up to ±5% of the minor radius in present day machines. Good agreement can be found …

In the merging-compression method of plasma start-up, two flux-ropes with parallel toroidal current are formed around in-vessel poloidal field coils, before merging to form a spherical tokamak plasma. This start-up method, used in the Mega-Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST), is studied as a high Lundquist number and low plasma-beta magnetic reconnecti…

The new approach in advancing the use of fusion, “Fusion for Neutrons” (F4N), is proposed. The application of a small or medium size Spherical Tokamak (ST) as a powerful steady-state fusion neutron source (FNS) is discussed. An overview of various conceptual designs of such neutron sources is given and they are compared with a recently proposed…
