When RF waves are applied in tokamaks with metal walls, sheath rectification effects associated with the fields induced in the scrape-off layer (SOL) may lead to enhanced plasma-wall interactions (i.e. heat-loads in the limiters, RF-induced impurity sources) which can endanger the integrity of the machine and limit the RF power. Although many co…

Several Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) schemes in DT plasma have been considered for the ITER reactor [1]. Most of these heating schemes are minority heating at fundamental frequency. In DT plasma, both reactants can also absorb RF power as majorities at fundamental n=1 or harmonic n=2 frequency. Understanding benefits of directly heatin…

Unusually high power loads on the Beryllium limiter caused by Neutral Beam re-ionisation, and much cooler divertor target surfaces were observed during the recent JET tritium campaign. As both phenomena are driven by scrape-off layer (SOL) physics, the SOL features of 72 tritium H-mode discharges and their deuterium references have been studied. …

The Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) is currently being extensively upgraded to provide a system that will be able to add to the knowledge base for ITER as well as testing innovative reactor systems such as the Super-X divertor. MAST-U will have increased coil system and power supply capability. Therefore, to ensure operation of MAST-U within safe…

Understanding the impact of the synergistic effects on fast ion distribution function (DF) is essential for maximising the fusion rates in magnetic confinement fusion plasma. Because fusion reactions such as D-D, D-3He, D-T etc. have different energy dependencies, tailoring the energies of the fast ions to predetermined values optimal for fusion…

As part of the preparation for the second JET DT campaign (DTE2), a series of isotope control experiments in H/D mixtures [1] have shown that NBI fuelling species has only a weak effect on the core isotope composition, which remains determined by the edge H/D ratio and therefore by the injected gas.

During the 2015-2016 JET campaigns many efforts have been devoted to the exploration of high-performance plasma scenarios envisaged for DT operation in JET. In this paper we review various key recent hybrid discharges and model the combined ICRF+NBI heating. These deuterium discharges with deuterium beams had the ICRF antenna frequency tuned to mat…

Fast ion synergistic effects were studied by predictive modelling of JET best performing pulses for various levels of Neutral Beam (NB) and Radio Frequency (RF) power. Calculated DD neutron yields were analysed with the intention of separating the impact of sheer synergistic effects due to changes in fast ion (FI) distribution function (DF) from su…

Measurements are reported of electromagnetic emission close to the cyclotron frequency of energetic ions in JET plasmas heated by waves in the ion cylotron range of frequencies (ICRF). Hydrogen was the majority ion species in all of these plasmas. The measurements were obtained using a sub-harmonic arc detection (SHAD) system in the transmission li…

Experiments have been performed under the coordination of the International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) on several tokamaks, including ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), JET and DIII-D, to characterize the increased ICRF antenna loading achieved by optimizing the position of gas injection relative to the RF antennas. On DIII-D, AUG and JET (with the ITER-Lik…
